Staff Champions Chuck Jeffrey and Augustine Erpelding lead the giving procession at the closing ceremony.

On Thursday, May, 2, 2013, Glendale Community College concluded “Keeping the Torch Lit,” a five-week fundraising campaign that generated $74,000 for student scholarships and programs. The Olympic-style theme encouraged faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members to be “champions of giving.” Several first-time giving options motivated donors, including text-based giving, online giving, a Casino Night special event and Dining to Donate at Applebee’s, Peter Piper Pizza and Yogurtini.

At the campaign’s closing ceremony keynote speaker Olympian Kyle Alcorn celebrated the employees’ accomplishments. Alcorn, the first Arizona State University student to compete in the Olympic steeplechase event, holds an ASU record as the second-fastest Sun Devil in the steeplechase event.  Alcorn spoke about his experience at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, and what it means to be a champion.

Co-champions who led the GCC fundraising campaign included: GCC students Robert Moreno and Patricia Martarella; GCC faculty Gary Marrer and Polly Laubach; GCC staff Charles Jeffery and Augustine Erpelding; Rosa Larkin, alumna; and Luis De La Cruz, President & CEO, Andale Construction and Phil Randolph, President Emeritus, community members.
