Edmundo Hidalgo was honored as the 2013 Hero of Education at a recognition dinner held at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel on April 25, 2013.
Heroes of Education is sponsored by the Maricopa Community Colleges and the Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation. It honors those who have a proven personal and professional commitment to supporting students and educational opportunities.
At the dinner, Mr. Hidalgo was acknowledged for his personal and professional dedication to education as a means of achieving social justice and advancement for all.
Mr. Hidalgo serves as president and CEO of Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc. (CPLC), a statewide community development corporation with over 40 years of service in education, economic development, housing and health and human services.
Under Mr. Hidalgo’s leadership, the organization has grown significantly in the past five years, and has become a highly visible advocate for social and economic development, especially in low-income Latino communities.
Also acknowledged at the event were ten “College Heroes,” including GCC and The Dougherty Foundation, a non-profit educational trust named for the late M.J.G. and Bess Dougherty, who placed their estate in trust for the education of good students with financial need. The foundation supports scholarships and loans for Arizona undergraduate and graduate students.
Proceeds of the event benefit the ACE (Achieving a College Education) Program, Chicanos Por La Causa (CPLC) Matching Scholarship Fund and the General Scholarship Fund.
