Glendale Community College students will join other Maricopa Community College students from across the Valley to celebrate the arts 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 16 at the Orpheum Theater in Phoenix.
The ninth annual Artists of Promise event will feature visual art, creative writing and music, dance and theatre performances. The public is invited to attend the no-cost event.
Those attending the gala event will pass through the gilded lobby of the historic theatre, where they may view the work of five GCC students (Arnon Livingstone, Danielle Mikulski, Jennifer Mayhew Jones, Claudia Martinez and Elizabeth Pineda), which will hang in the lobby art exhibition.
Dr. Rufus Glasper, Chancellor of Maricopa Community Colleges, will open the evening’s festivities. Andrea Hashim, GCC Dance Program Director, will serve as master of ceremonies.
Performances include a solo guitar piece by GCC student Christian Pascale and an instrumental ensemble comprising Ricardo Araiza, Michael Hawley, Luis Martinez, Hans Nieschulz, Jonathan Nilsen, Christian Pascale, Joshua Pierce and Alex Resnik on guitars.
Sam Rabourn will perform an original composition featuring piano and percussion, and the thespian talents of Jaime Gaeta and Jonathan Hanson will take center stage in two short performances.
Demonstrating the strength of GCC’s music program, GCC students swept the Instrumental Ensembles category, taking first, second and third place. First place honors went to GCC’s Guitar Octet ensemble: Ricardo Aralza, Michael Hawley, Luis Martinez, Hans Nieschulz, Jonathan Nilsen, Joshua Pierce, Christian Pascale and Alex Resnick. Olive Ave Guitar Duo (Jonathan Nilson and Christian Pascale) placed second and Guitar Duo (Laura Meador and Joshua Pierce) placed third in the category.
GCC students Sam Rabourn and Christopher Montano took first and second place, respectively, in the Composition competition. Christian Pascale took first place in Guitar performance, and Jonathan Nilsen, third in the category. Alberto Vargas won third-place honors in Piano.
The men of GCC’s Theatre Department acted their way to the top, with Jaime Gaeta taking first place in Male Acting, followed by Austin Kiehle, second place, and Luis Prado III in third place. In the Female Acting category, Salome Chuma took second place and Bailey Hall placed third.
Wendell Owens took third place in Solo Choreography and Alejandra Cavazos garnered second place in Group Choreography.
Honorable mentions went to Kevin G. O’Connor for Theatre Design and Kaylee Thompson for Solo Choreography. GCC Jazz Combo members Elliott Fox, Josh Keller, Jeremy Lentz, Luis Martinez and Derek Nellis also received an honorable mention in the Jazz Ensemble category.

The Maricopa County Community College District sponsors annual competitions in creative writing, dance/choreography, music, visual art and theatre. The competitions in visual art and creative writing are also sponsored nationally by the league for innovation in the Community College.
