Experience the spirit of Japanese culture, art, music and food at the Spirit of Japan Festival,
9:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m., Tues., March 26 in the GCC Student Union. This event is free and open to the public.
The Festival schedule includes:
09:30 a.m: Karate Demonstration by the GCC Shotokan Karate Club;
10:00 a.m: Shakuhachi (Japanese flute), Bobby Avstreih;
10:30 a.m.: Traditional and modern dances and songs performed by the GCC Japanese Culture Club;
11:00 a.m.: Traditional fisheries, modern sustainability, and daily life in Kyoto, a discussion with Dr. Robert Reavis;
11:30 a.m: Japanese lunch (free) and piano performance by Evan Pyles;
12:00 p.m: Taiko (Japanese drums), Eileen Morgan;
12:30 p.m.: Cosplay Contest, Samurai Comics;
1:00 p.m: Kendo Demonstration (Japanese fencing), Phoenix Kendo Kai;
1:30 p.m.: Judo and Jiu-jitsu, Phoenix College Judo & Jiu-jitsu Club.
Displays and demonstrations include: origami, calligraphy, kimono, manga
drawing, fashion, Japanese classes, Japanese Culture Club. Local vendors include Samurai Comics and Encolor.
