Get ready to recycle! RecycleMania, a 10-week, friendly competition amongst colleges across the country, runs Feb. 3-March 31. This year GCC is out to beat last  years record – 13.43 tons of recyclable material.

During RecycleMania, schools across America and Canada will report the amounts of trash and recycling collected each week and are then ranked in various categories. Winning schools receive an award made of recyclables and earn the category’s traveling trophy for the coming year.

Last year Glendale Community College competed for the first-time in the Waste Minimization category and placed in the top 10%, 15th overall, exceeding 2011 numbers by 1.64 tons. GCC’s goal this year is to set a new recycling record, increase recycling, and continue the efforts of the GCC Zero Waste Program.

This year GCC is competing in two RecycleMania categories. The Stephen K Gaski Per Capita Classic challenges schools to collect the largest combined amount of paper, cardboard, bottles and cans per person. See GCC’s weekly waste and recycling data online at GCC Recycle Program. The Waste Minimization category winner will be the school that produces the least amount of recyclable and trash per person.

GCC has participated in the RecycleMania tournament for the last 3 years, and is one of just three colleges in Arizona (along with ASU and University of Arizona) to join this friendly competition.

Chanda Fraulino, Recycle Program Coordinator at GCC, is excited about this third year of competition. “RecycleMania is a great opportunity to focus on recycling awareness. Recycling on campus has increased significantly in the past two years and has successfully integrated into our campus culture.  The Zero Waste Program has also been well-received with 50% participation helping us reduce waste and increase recycling.  It’s always fun to try to set a new monthly recycling record during the competition and 13.43 tons is this year’s number to beat.”

Last year 605 colleges and universities across America and Canada participated in the event, with total recycling of over 94 million pounds. RecycleMania began in 2001 and started out as a challenge between Ohio University and Miami University. Miami came away with the win that first year, but Ohio was not far behind. The initiative began as a way to get the student body more involved in recycling. In 2002 other universities were invited to participate and since then RecycleMania has taken off. The tournament has now grown to include a second division of 9 competition categories.
